John grew up in Athlone in Ireland and attended the Irish/Swiss Institute of Horology.
Responding to the lure of Switzerland, John worked with such classic marques as Audemars Piquet and Christophe Claret, garnering valuable experience working on complicated watches and developing Prototypes.
He returned to Ireland to establish a workshop making complicated watches in 1999. In 2006 he established the McGonigle watch brand with his brother Stephen.
The first McGonigle model is an exquisitely finished Tourbillon expressing the virtues of elegant simplicity and artisan craftsmanship. True to the philosophy that less is more.
This was followed by the ‘Tuscar’, a watch with a double barrelled, time only movement.
